Book Character Day - October 31st
On Friday, October 31st, we will be having Book Character Day at Arbor Heights. Children have been encouraged to bring an item, costume, etc. to school that goes along with a character from a book (fiction or non-fiction). Nothing elaborate is needed. The idea is for our kids to have fun and become even more excited about reading. Our schedule for the afternoon will be as follows:
  • 1:30 - 1:50 Children put on costumes and visit with each other on the playground.
  • 1:55 - 2:15 Two parades will take place. The children will be led through classrooms so that all can see.
  • 2:15 - 2:30 Room exchanges. Children form neighboring classrooms can get together and talk about their characters.
  • 2:30 - 3:00 Room parties. Treats are being provided.
The morning Kindergarten will have their own parade/party.

Money for Parties
Each year we have two room parties. One is in conjunction with Book Character Day. The other comes in February. We provide the treats for these parties so that all the rooms have the same thing. We are asking for donations of $3.00 per child to help cover the cost of the treats. If you would like to send a little more it will cover the cost for families who may not be able to donate. You may send cask or checks (made payable to Arbor Heights School) to your child's teacher. Thank you.

West Seattle Parade - This Saturday
All of the schools in West Seattle will be participating in a parade this Saturday morning. The kids from Arbor Heights will be dressed as the book characters which were described above. If you would like your child(ren) to be in the parade, bring them to the parking lot of First Lutheran Church, one block west of California Avenue at 44th and Dakota, at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday. I will be there along with Ms. Napolitan and Mr. Wilkie. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. We will walk south on California Avenue for four blocks. The event will be over around 10:45. If your child(ren) will be coming please return the tear off at the bottom of this bulletin by tomorrow. Thank you.

Community Forums
The Seattle school board is considering two proposals, 1) having parents pay for full day kindergarten and 2) a capital improvement levy that would provide funding for building improvements at almost every school in Seattle. A community form will be held at Lafayette Elementary School (2645 California Avenue S.W.) on October 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
Also, the school board will be holding a public hearing on the new student assignment proposal. This meeting will be held at the district's central office (815 - 4th Avenue N.) on October 29th at 7:00 p.m.

Campfire Boys and Girls
Reminder: October 16th - CAMPFIRE BOYS and GIRLS - come join the fun! A parent information and registration meeting will be held tonight, Thursday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m. in our Cafeteria. If you have any questions please call Diane Parry 935-0922.

Sincerely,
Carl Leatherman
Principal
