Parent Bulletin
September 30, 1999

Dear Parents,

The second Parent Information Night will be tonight in the Arbor Heights cafeteria from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. I hope you can attend.

The primary reading groups began last week. There will be at least one more group established when we add a half-time teacher to lower class size, with a focus on reading. This half-time position is funded by a one year federal grant.

Grade 2 students will be taking the DRA (Direct Reading Assessment) the first two weeks of October. This is a state mandated test. First grade students will be given the DRA sometime during the first trimester.

Our Self-Manager program will begin next week. Teachers will nominate students from their classes that have demonstrated the skills necessary to earn a Self Manager button.

I hope you have had a chance to review the grade level standards that went home last week. We want to encourage you to supplement your child's growth towards meeting these standards by developing activities at home that facilitate academic growth. If you have any questions about strategies you want to use at home, please contact your child's teacher or call me during regular office hours (933-5350).

One of the primary reading groups is in need of Walkman-type cassette players with headsets. If you have any of these you are no longer using, please consider donating them to the school.

Sincerely,
Barry S. Dorsey
Principal

Change in Weather
With the arrival of fall we ask that you send your child to school in clothing that is appropriate for the weather. We also ask that you put your child's name in their coat. If your child comes home with clothing that is not theirs please send it back to school. We have had a few children lose jackets this year and, as we all know, it is expensive to replace them.
