The Reading Challenge
I have made a deal with the boys and girls at Arbor Heights. If
they are able to read 2,000 books between April 1st and April 30th I will
write a RAP song and perform in front of the whole school. If the kids
are able to meet my challenge the RAP will take place on Friday, May 9th.
Your child will be bringing home a form for you to sign each time he/she
finishes a book. A graph showing the number of books read will be kept in
the hall outside of the library. The students are to read books that are
appropriate for their reading level. Kindergarten children may want to
read their books together with you. The students seem excited about the
challenge right now, so I hope you will encourage your child to read as
much as possible. Spring vacation (April 14 - 18) is an excellent time
for pleasure reading.
The Greening of Arbor Heights
Plans to improve the gardens (and plant new ones) at our school are
proceeding nicely. We'll let you know when we're ready for some
volunteer help. There will not be a workday party this weekend. Bob Kiel
and Jean Robinson are coordinating this project.
Pants Needed
We are in need of some sweat pants with elastic at the top and bottom.
Occasionally a child has "an accident" at school and we need some dry
clothing. If you have any you can donate it would be appreciated.
The IOWA Test
Our school will be administrating the IOWA Test of Basic Skills to
all of our 2nd through 5th graders. This is the test that many states
give near the end of the school year. We plan to test the weeks of April
21st. Please try to see to it that your child is in attendance that week
(unless ill) and that he/she comes to school well rested.
How the State of Washington and Seattle Public Schools are working
to improve student achievement through improved student testing and
curriculum changes will be the focus of a special television/radio show to
be broadcast at 7 p.m. April 10 on cable channel 28 and radio station KNHC
FM 89.5.
Food, Clothing, Coin Drive
Our food, clothing and coin drive aimed at helping the homeless in
Seattle ends this Friday. Thank you very much for your support.
Sincerely,
