STORIES, POEMS AND ARTICLES BY ARBOR HEIGHTS STUDENTS
Sudent editors: Jacob, Sonya, Jing Wen Niu
Editors: Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Shaw,
Communication Center
Our dear principal Mr. Fowler is leaving Arbor Heights! But
why, after all these years?... I remember all those Halloweens
where he was a clown. I’m sure we all remember Grandma Rosie.
We don’t want you to go, Mr. Fowler!
Good luck in the future!
But a big, big welcome to Carl Leatherman, our new principal.
Hi, it’s me again, Matt,
the kid with a new opinion. I am sad to say that this is my last article,
although I will try to convince Ms. Thompson to let me write next year.
PLEASE? It has been fun to drive you (and politicians) absolutely nuts. I
have been thinking about a good topic for my last article. I decided that I
wanted to make some predictions on what will happen to some of the people
I’ve known over the years. I’ll start with some of of my friends since first
grade: Wes and Taylor. I think that we are going to eventually
figure out how to communicate telepathically and
and start giving each other answers on tests. Then eventually we’ll become millionaires
and retire by the time we’re twenty one.
Next, my second grade teacher... Ms. Shavey! I
think that one day she will find out that her student is a millionaire and ask me for a
growth tonic and will become a good 5’ 11”.
My brother, Tom, will become a great
thinker and will go down in history as one of the inventors of the garbage compactor
which takes one cubic mile of garbage and turns it into one cubic inch.
Next, I predict my
third grade teacher, Mr. Ahlness, will become a rich computer millionaire like Bill Gates.
Next, Mr. Dorr, my first and fourth grade teacher. I think he will eventually become
a stand up comedian for kids who can’t see and sick kids at a hospitial.
And last but
definitely not least, Mr. Wagner, my current teacher, will attach rockets to his motor
home and fly to the moon, visiting all the craters.
Oh, dang, I forgot myself - well, I’m going
to go into the writing industry and develop some software on the side. I'll make more money
than Bill Gates and make a good salary on the intrest. Well, it’s been good writing
this year. Thanks. Bye bye. Asta Lavista. Cheerio, and don’t eat too many beans!
P.S. Life is like sky diving. Once you do it, you don’t want to again.
Matt
GOOD KIDS!
by the Super Kids
This is a thank you letter to all the kids that worked hard and
helped Arbor Heights in the past year.
We have seen you on the playground. When someone was hurt you
ran for help! We have seen you helping in the lunchroom and the
library. We saw you helping in the kindergarten room so they could
understand more. We have seen you giving up lunch recess to serve
all the kids in the school. We have seen you help each other in the
classroom. Lots of times we have seen you helping the custodian! So
to all of you we say, “Thank you!”

Wolf Pup Facts
When wolf pups are born they may weigh a pound or less. Pups may start to fight
when they’re about 30 days old. They may fight for a number of days. At the end, one of
the pups rolls over and shows it gives up. The winner raises it’s tail just like an adult wolf
would.
A baby wolf can die in the cold without its parents. Baby wolves can grow-up faster
than people.
One adult wolf, usually the mom, will stay with them.

Classroom News and our Famous Mr.
Wilkie
Dear Readers,
May 25th was the Young Authors’ Conference. Each student in the school
has written a book. In my class we wrote books about old time Seattle or a family
story. We read our books to a parent, author, or administrator. After that we had
a little party with sandwiches. Parents and visitors were welcome to visit.

Rm. 23—Reggie, Adam, gr. 5
Our class went on the Harbor Tour. It was beautiful weather and we went on
this big old boat for two hours. We saw an ice-breaker and a container ship. This
machine picks up those large containers and puts them ships. The ice-breaker
ship was exciting. They go full speed into the ice to break it up.
We are looking forward to fun in the sun this summer.
Rm. 18—Machaela, Andy, Gr.2
We went on a field trip on May 10. We have walking sticks and have made
clocks and space pictures. We are looking forward to summer so we can go to the
Seattle Center and ride the rides.
Rm.17—Danielle,Taylor, Gr.1
We are learning about things that happen every month. We have been having
lots of fun.
Our hamster is very big and is named Ken Griffey Jr. He likes to sleep, bury
himself and eat.
We made leprechauns. Mine is green, brown, red, yellow, and black. We have
lots more on the calendar to do.
After we read The Line Softie Drew we started reading Jimmy Lee. We also
have five new books and we are reading, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Magic. We are on
the fifth chapter.
We just started a new thing called the Good Luck Club. I like it. It’s cool.
Danielle
We are studying about rattle snakes.
Last week a man came to our class and told us about ... RECYCLING!

HERE’S A QUESTION FOR YOUR YOUNGER DUDES AND DUDETTES.

Third graders are going swimming with Mr. Warford. In room 16 they are
writing fiction and nonfiction books for Young Authors. Some of them are making
ABC books about their families. Someone else is doing a Spanish book. Mallory
is done with the birds for her book. They are all looking forward to summer.
Room 14—Dustin, Katrina Gr. 2
Every boy and girl in room 14 wrote about Raven, the Trickster. We got into
groups and made our stories into plays. My group had Cale, Adam, Matt, and me.
We made it a play with these animals: Raven,Bear,Beaver,Eagle, and Hawk. It’s
fun to make plays.
We went up to Mr. Wagner’s classroom for our stories to be typed by the
fifth graders because they have laptops. They were nice to us. We got to play
games after we were done. (Interview by Maria)
Last month the whole school
did the CAT tests and the test had 50 pages!
Ashes Ashes
Ashes, ashes on my face!
What happened to you?
What happened to me?
What happened to us?
We got too close to the campfire...
That’s what happened to us.
That’s what happened to the
both of us!

Room 9—Wesley, Gr.3
I’m sure we’re all looking forward to summer vacation. I know I am! I
interviewed some of the kids in my class about where they might be going this
summer. Eric is going to visit his aunt and uncle. James is going to a camp in
Canada called Camp Elfenstone. Shawn is going to Ocean Shores, Lauren is
going to Disneyland. (Sorry, not enough room for all of the article.)
Mrs. Salter is going to the University of Washington. (No rest for the teachers! )
Room 7—Cameron, Alexandra, 4th grade
Room 7 wishes you a happy vacation and to get your mind off of school!!!
We are doing country’s reports. We have to pick a country from our heritage.
Kids are doing countries from all over Europe, Asia and North America. One kid
is doing Mexico, one is doing Germany, and one is doing Thailand. I have a
friend who is doing Denmark. There are a lot of kids doing England, Ireland, and
Italy.
It is hard work, but Ms. Luke makes it sounds easy. In Math we are doing
addition of fractions with different denominators. In Reading, we are finishing up
our books for the Young Authors’ Conference.
Room — 15 Jed
We just had a fieldtrip to Lincoln Park. We found an octopus, large eels,
snails, jellyfish, limpets, barnacles, rocks, and different kinds of seaweed. We
saw seastars with 5, 6, and 7 legs. When we went under the docks we saw large
sea anemones that were red, orange and white. The last thing we saw was a
huge crab about 12” wide!
More Classroom News and Eagles by the
Phantoms
In Room 24 we have been editing and writing articles for the Jr. Seahawk
News. We set the salmon free at Longfellow Creek near Delridge. We got to
name our salmon what ever we wanted to. After that we went to Alki Beach and
helped pick up garbage. We found a lot of paper, glass, and not very many pop
cans.
Rm 4—Allison, Kellen, K
They made trains. They said they should recycle more. They want to go to first
grade next year. They made
the trains out of recycled stuff. The next letter is “X”.
(interview by Kris)
They are on the letter “W” and here are some of the words: water,
watermelon, weeds... They picked the weeds out of their garden. They are
growing flowers and they had a garden last year, too. Their garden has a sign
that says Kindergarten’s Garden Do not touch. They have animals, too: walking
sticks, a lizard, and tad poles.
(Interview by Maria)
Rm 1—Hilary, Steven, gr. 1
We went to the Children’s Festival at the Seattle Center. We had fun. We
spun a wheel and we got prizes. There was lots of cotton candy, licorice and
other good stuff. Some of us got our faces painted. We ate tacos with sugar,
kind of an experiment instead of hot sauce. All of us had hot chocolate. We
learned how to fix some tortillas. and learned about the people in Mexico.

This month some kids wrote to the newsletter about different topics. Some of
them were about recess, the teachers, the Oklahoma City bombing, and some
other things. These all start with “Dear Editor,” so I won’t put that in at the
beginning. Keep on reading, yours might be here!
I just wanted to let you know, or inform you, that I want every kid in our school to
have any kind of sweets and as much as they want everyday.

really sad or bad in Oklahoma City. I know I feel very sad. I wish it did not hurt
boys, girls, moms, dads, and all kinds of people. I wish there was not even a
bomb that blew up in Oklahoma City. I hope the people are getting lots and lots
