--- TIC-TECH message:
As announced earlier today via district-wide email, spammers have been
taking advantage of open relaying on some district mail servers. This has
resulted in the Seattle Schools domains' being listed on a site that many
Internet sites consult to determine what email sources to block.
Information Services is taking action to prevent relaying via cks. However,
there are other mail hosts in the district that are also open to relaying.
We are testing for those hosts now, and will be contacting the owners of
those hosts as we identify them so that the problem can be corrected.
It's possible that there are mail hosts in the district that haven't been
registered with IS. Effective almost immediately, those hosts will not be
reachable from outside the district. The reason is that smtp access to the
district will no longer be permissive. Instead, we'll allow access only to
known and registered hosts so that we can avoid unintentionally making open
relays available.
If your site has a mail server that hasn't been registered, please email me
with the server name and IP address. Registered hosts have an MX record in
DNS. If you're unsure whether your mail server has an MX record, send the
name and IP address and we'll let you know its status.
Thanks,
Judy
