--- TIC-TECH message:
First, two pieces of good news - CKS dial-in is back in operation, and it's
once again possible to send email using CKS or OWA (Outlook Web Access) from
outside the district.
CKS Status:
The dial access to CKS is back in operation. However, there is still a
response-time problem when connected by dial-in. We are trying to track down
the source of that delay, and will provide more information when it's
available.
Sending email from outside the district:
On Monday we advised all district users that we needed to shut down open
relaying on district mail servers. This was necessary to prevent spammers
from using district servers to inundate other sites with junk mail.
A consequence of blocking mail relaying on CKS was that district staff could
not use POP3 or IMAP clients to send mail from outside the district via CKS.
We now have a functioning work-around for that problem.
Details of the work-around for CKS users:
*The user must check incoming mail before trying to send outgoing mail.
*Permission to send outgoing mail is active for one hour after the user
checks incoming mail.
*The user's email client can not be set to use Secure Password
Authentication or SSL.
Staff who use OWA (Outlook Web Access) from outside the district can send
mail without any modifications to their current setup. They should continue
to use SSL.
Thanks,
Judy
