--- TIC-TECH message:
(By the way, please change the subject line when changing the subject).
Before the district's new WAN/LAN wiring, I would have said that this was a
great buy. I had been buying 10 Mbps 4 Port hubs for $45. Before the
WAN/LAN wiring, our system had 10 Mbps hubs, so buying 10/100 hubs or
switches would have been a waste of money.
But, the district is now delivering 100 Mbps to us. It is now a disservice
to use 10 Mbps. Also, Switches will greatly improve your performance. I
will no longer buy anything but 10/100 Switches.
I'm quite sure that the district's new standard is going to be 10/100
Switches and they should be unmanaged ones. If we connect managed Hubs or
Switches to the district's managed Switches, they may end up fighting it
out for control, which hurts everyone.
Also, keep in mind that you want to minimize "Hub Hops". You shouldn't
have network data travling through more than four hubs. And, keep in mind
that the data may have already have traveled through a couple of hubs
before it got to your room. So, when you need a few more ports, it is far
better to replace the Hub or Switch with one with more ports and to use the
old Hub someone else. It is not a good plan to just connect another Hub in
series to get a few more ports.
You can often seem to violate rules of networking and get away with it, but
sooner or later, it will come back to bite you. And, it is very difficult
to troubleshoot a network that violates rules all over.
