--- TIC-TECH message:
Over the past year, we've experienced significant problems with dial access
to cks. Dial access is expensive in both dollar cost and support resources.
Also, the existing dial equipment doesn't support the protocols necessary
for using browsers, so staff aren't able to take advantage of many of the
Internet's services via the dial access.
The dial-in problem was discussed briefly during the November 30th Tech
Forum meeting. Rather than purchase expensive new dial-in equipment, John
Rowlands suggested that cks users be migrated to Outlook or Outlook Web
Access (OWA) for email. Attendees generally agreed that this would be a good
direction.
For these reasons, effective 4/1/2001 dial access to cks will be terminated.
Once dial access is shut down, staff will have three basic alternatives for
accessing cks - via an ISP, via the VAX, or via a district routed
connection.
Obtaining an ISP (Internet Service Provider) account will probably be the
method of choice for those who have been dialing in. Puget Sound ESD has
Internet access accounts available to district staff at $13.50/month. The IS
Help Line (252-0333) can provide a brochure to anyone interested in one of
these accounts. There are also companies, such as Juno, who provide free
Internet access. Costco recently offered free Internet accounts to its
membership as well.
Having an ISP account offers additional benefits - the ability to browse the
web, faster modem access speeds, use of a graphical email client, and the
ability to sign up for a seattleschools.org OWA email account (district
employees only).
Thanks,
Judy
