FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OSPI, Department of Natural Resources to sponsor Web design contest
Tech-savvy middle and high school students to compete for prizes
OLYMPIA - Dec. 18, 2000 - Tech-savvy students in Washington's middle
and
high schools can click-and-drag their way to a new computer by competing
in
the third annual "Nature Greets Technology Web Site Contest," sponsored
by
the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Department of
Natural Resources.
"Today's middle and high school students are quite talented when it
comes to technology and Web design," said Linda Bull, Web developer and
one
of the contest organizers for OSPI. "This is a great chance for students
to
show off their skills and have some fun in the process. Last year, some
teachers used this as a classroom assignment, which gave students
greater
access to technology and resources," she said. "I know we're all looking
forward to this year's entries."
Prizes will be awarded to public school or home-schooled students
based
on their use of technology to illustrate one of two themes: "Wildfire -
Safe
in Your Forest Home" or "The Many Ways We Use Washington's Natural
Resources." All entries will be grouped by grade level (Level 1 - grades
6-9; Level 2 - grades 10-12).
All entries should be designed for an audience of the students'
peers,
to convey the importance of each theme as well as its relevance to their
lives. A panel of judges from OSPI and DNR will evaluate the entries
based
on creativity, educational content, ease of use and overall visual
appearance.
Four first place awards will be granted, one for each grade level in
each theme category. This year's contest prizes include:
· First prize - Computer
· Second prize - Mountain bike
· Third prize - Digital camera
· Fourth prize - Gift certificate
· Fifth prize - Backpack
Prizes for this year's contest reflect a combination of
private-sector
donations and funds allocated by the Department of Natural Resources for
educational programs. Last year's winning entries can be viewed at:
http://www.k12.wa.us/webcontest/lastwinners.htm.
The deadline for the contest is April 30; winners will be notified
on
May 18, 2001. For additional contest rules and specific details on
submitting an entry, visit the OSPI Web site at
