--- TIC-TECH message:
Yesterday afternoon at the Tech Forum, I presented some information on our
Exchange email rollout. I'm going to summarize the presentation so those who
weren't able to attend will also receive the information. Rather than
sending one humongous email, I'll break it into 3 messages.
Rollout status:
Ten schools have been completed and 16 are in progress.
The biggest challenge we have with the rollout is getting the account forms
back, with correct and legible information. Pass along the word that the
rollout can go faster in many cases if the information comes back to us in a
timely and usable fashion.
What is being provided:
All users are getting Exchange email accounts, whether the user is a teacher
or an administrative staff person. Exchange is the email service. Outlook
and OWA are clients that access the Exchange email service.
The original plan was to set all users up with the full Outlook client. Our
experience in rolling out the first school showed that we would never
complete the rollout if we stuck with this plan. The reason was the amount
of time consumed verifying that the equipment could handle the client,
dealing with machines that turned out not to satisfy the requirements even
after the survey, and just the time required for each install.
The revised plan specifies Outlook Web Access (OWA) for teachers and the
Outlook client for administrative staff.
This is an interim solution. If the upcoming levy passes, making more robust
machines available to teachers, then we'll revisit the client issue and move
to Outlook clients for all.
See Part 2 for OWA Information
Thanks,
Judy
