Subject: Blue Web'nŽ Update: February 2 and February 9, 2001

Blue Web'nŽ Update lists the weekly additions to Blue Web'nŽ, a searchable online library of Blue-Ribbon Web sites categorized by Grade Level, Content Area, Application, and Dewey Decimal Number.

Browse, search, and view archived updates online at
    http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/bluewebn

Well, if anyone noticed, there was no Blue Web'n Update sent last week.
(Sorry, this Blue Webbie was totally incapacitated) I would have sent
out a message saying there would be no update, but that is a TWOB (Total
Waste of Bandwidth). This week, there will be double the sites. Enjoy!

Register now so that your class can participate. The dates of the
project run from March 5 to May 25, 2001. Students will complete surveys
of observed physical characteristics, formulate hypotheses, and use the
data compiled by students around the globe to test their hypotheses.
Your students will never look at earlobes without thinking of this
    project!

    New Sites

    My California.Gov
    http://my.ca.gov *****

Ok, California residents, here is a website that really lets you access
a variety of governmental and non-governmental resources. The State
Librarians lent their expertise to help create a website with a lot of
well-organized information. Renew licenses, learn about California's
geography and history, check the weather, or enter a contest (the
current Photography contest is open only to California residents).

    The Centennial Exhibition: Philadelphia 1876
    http://libwww.library.phila.gov/CenCol/index.htm ****

What caused quite a stir 125 years ago? The Centennial Exhibition in
Philadelphia, which featured the wonders of the Industrial Age and
exhibits from 37 countries, was the talk of the times. The Philadelphia
Library has digitized artifacts from the Exhibition, and put them
online. Students might be interested in the diary of a teenager that
attended the exhibition. Included are ideas for classroom activities in
History, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Music.

Grade Level: Middle School, High School
Content Area: History & Social Studies (U.S. History) Dewey #973,
    Mathematics (General) Dewey #510

    Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries
    http://www.humanities-interactive.org/splendors/ ****

This collection allows access to over 100 images and articles about the
art and culture Mexico. Dual frames make it a little confusing, but
choose either the left or right frame and browse through the collection.
In the Reading Room, selected articles are available in English and
Spanish. Under Activities, look for learning activities (Treasure Hunts)
for grades 5-8 and links to more resources on Mexico.

Grade Level: Elementary School, Middle School, High School
Content Area: Arts (Visual Arts) Dewey #750, Foreign Language (Spanish)

    Scholastic Winter Storms
    http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/wwatch/winter/index.htm *****

Students hear all sorts of stories about winter storms. This is your
chance to tie those stories into the science of storms, and look at
severe storms over the past three hundred years. My two favorite areas
are the Interactive Weather Maker and the Winter Storms Timeline. A
Teacher's Guide is included in this section.

Grade Level: Early Childhood, Elementary School, Middle School

    BUT Wait…There's More!

    Blue Web'n Update for February 9, 2001

This week, it's theme time again. This is one we should all be
interested in…copyright. Use these sites to learn more, or to give your
students access to images they can use appropriately in educational
projects. Yeah, this can be a boring topic, but the last two sites have
    lots of fun images.

    A Visit to Copyright Bay
    http://www.nmjc.cc.nm.us/copyrightbay/

This is the most fun I've ever had learning about copyright. These
thorny, legal issues are presented in a fun tutorial that lets you
navigate Fair Use Harbor, visit Murky Waters, and crash on Infringement
Reef. Fair Use Harbor includes information about AV Materials,
Multimedia, Single copies, Multiple copies, and Distance Learning. You
and the rest of the staff at your school or library can take a Shakedown
    Cruise to test your knowledge.

    Copyright Tips and Issues
    http://www.siec.k12.in.us/~west/online/copy.htm ****

If your students are producing projects in many media, you should work
with the students to increase awareness of copyright issues. Learn the
ins-and outs of publishing student work. Help develop ethically minded
adults who respect copyright. Tell It to the Judge tests your copyright

    Crash Course in Copyright
    http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/cprtindx.htm#top ****

The University of Texas strikes again with a information filled site on
copyright. Teachers can check out the online tutorial and test on
copyright. Older students can look under online Presentations/Students
for information regarding student use of copyrighted materials. This
website is also a great resource if you or your students want to protect
    media you have created.

reports? Pics4learning put together this site of images, along with a
clear use policy for images. Teachers can get ideas for groups projects
or reports using technology in the lesson area.

ZooNet gathers together links to zoos and a great image gallery of

    when an image is used.
