    Master Teacher Recruiting Information

    Basic Applicant Requirements
     
    o Current K-12 classroom teachers in our district or teachers working on
    special assignment who have not been out of the classroom for more than
    three years and who are intending to return to the classroom within one
    year

    o Preference will be given to teachers with demonstrated experience in
    integrating computers into their content area.

    o Must demonstrate competency in Microsoft* Windows* 95/98/2000 or NT
    4.0, Office 97/2000, email, and Internet navigation.

    Desired Qualifications

    Ability to work with and instruct colleagues
    Commitment to three years of training
    Willingness to recruit participants
    Organizational and communication skills
    Currently staffed in a school with high percentage of free and reduced
    lunch

    Benefits

    o Stipends: $750 after training the first group of 20 Participant
    Teachers during the summer of 2001, $1,000 after training the second
    group of 20 Participant Teachers in 2002, and $1,500 for any subsequent
    group of 20 Participant Teachers in 2003.

    o $5,000 cash grant to your District from the Bill & Melinda Gates
    Foundation to purchase computer equipment for your classroom, plus a
    laptop computer with Office Pro 2000 and Encarta.

    o Opportunity to earn university credits (normal tuition charges apply).

    Master Teacher Responsibilities

    o Attend and fully participate in five consecutive days (35 classroom
    hours) of Master Teacher training and curriculum review, and attend a
    three-day Teacher Leadership Seminar funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates
    Foundation, and attend a follow-up training session for a total of 60
    hours. Substitute coverage will be provided by the Challenge Grant.

    o Recruit and train 20 qualified Participant Teachers from within your
    Local Education Agency(Seattle Schools) each year through 2002 - You
    need 20 registered teachers to hold a training session.

    o Deliver the 40-hour training over the course of not less than two
    weeks and not more than three months.

    o Perform other duties as assigned including uploading unit plans, as
    well as program evaluation and paperwork. A DETAILED LIST OF

    Master Teacher Training

     The five day training session will begin with an overview of the
    program and the role of the master teacher, then take approximately ½
    day to go through each of the ten modules during which time the Master
    Teachers will experience the curriculum as if they were a Participant
    Teacher. The 10 modules are as follows:

    · Module 9: Showcasing Unit Portfolio
    · Module 10: Developing and Implementation Plan

    Timeline

    · Now to April 1, 2001: Recruit potential master teachers from SSD and
    have them apply online at: http://www.intel.com/education/teachfuture

    · April 20, 2001: Selection and notification of SSD master teacher
    choices

    · May 14 - 18, 2001: Master teacher week-long training at the
    University of Washington

    · Spring 2001: Gate's TLP training seminar (residential)

    · Summer 2001: receipt of $5000 grant

    · Spring 2001: Begin first course (no later than October 29, 2001)

    · By December 31, 2001: Complete first course for 20 participants

    · January 2002 to December 2002: MT offers second course

    Delivery of Training

    The 40 hours of in-class training and 20-plus hours of required
    take-home activities cover 10 modules. The modules are broken into
    four-hour blocks that can be delivered in a variety of ways as long as
    the following conditions are met:
    · Training blocks must be at least one hour in length.
    · Each module must be completed within one week.
    · The class meets during the specified times as a group.
    · Two modules may be combined to provide an eight-hour day of
    instruction
    · Days must be scheduled between training sessions for participant
    practice and homework
