Tony et al.
The most important factor in successfully implementing and supporting
networked computers is setting solid standards. Attempting to manage and
support a large number of diverse platforms and protocols will result in
excessive cost and significantly reduced service level. Studies by Gartner
Group and others have consistently proved that the Total Cost of Ownership
(TCO) is reduced significantly when standards are in place.
One can spend a great amount of time and energy debating the merits of the
many different platforms available. However, once a standard is selected it
is essential that all users support those standards.
The Seattle Schools has adopted a Windows based standard for administration
computers and networks. Student classroom computers can be either Windows
based or Apple. All computers operating on a network must support TCP/IP.
See "inside.seattleschools.org" for more details.
The new Student Information System will be an administration based system.
At this time it is too early in the process to determine the standards for
client access to this system. However, one can be assured that a Windows
platform will be included in the Student Information System standards. As
we get closer to the design phase we will provide more information regarding
the client standards.
The BEXII will supply teacher computers. The plans for purchase and
distribution are not yet available. The funding stream will begin sometime
about May 2002 or sooner if funds can be borrowed in advance. Before that
time a plan will be developed for the teacher computers. This plan will
focus on the SSD standards.
This is the best synopsis that I can provide at this time. As technology
moves ahead we will continue to adjust our standards to meet the
requirements of our network systems.
I hope this helps with your questions.
Thanks!

--- TIC-TECH message:
Dear Folks,
We have been assured that the district will offer support for Macs. This
has been welcome news for many. There are a number of people at my school
would like to continue using Macs when we upgrade our computers for
teachers.
However, the best information I can get is that the coming student
information system will support PCs, and may or MAY NOT support Macs.
Purchasing thousands of dollars of computers for teachers which won't
access the district student information system doesn't sound wise.
So as we work on the building Technology Plan for our school do I advise
our staff that Macs are out-of-the-question, or do I tell them that they
will be supported by the district and we can go ahead and purchase them?
I get different answers depending on who I ask... so now I am asking all
of you.
By way of suggestion, it would seem that making access to this database
via the web would solve these issues... IF our web access can be made fast
enough that people don't experience undue frustration.
Thanks for your input.
