Also, have you considered MS Proxy Server 2.0
software or its successor viz., Internet Security
    & Acceleration Server (ISA)?

I have worked with the Proxy Server software in
another school district where we had our own web
server and it did a nice job of caching web hits
as well as providing limited filtering of inappro-
priate web sites. Another point to consider is
that Microsoft does often offer nice educational
    discounts for its products.

If you are also planning on putting up a web site
you might want to combine your caching software on
    a machine running e.g., Windows 2000 Server IIS 5.0
in member server mode. But you don't want to use
your W2K server with Active Directory Services since
I've been told it might conflict with the district's
    NT domain controllers.

    --- TIC-TECH message:
At Montlake we are not scheduled for district WAN wiring until May 2002 and
we've been battling slow Internet connection (we have been assuming that the
bottleneck is our ISDN connection but others already on the WAN assure me
that the problem is actually bess - but that's another topic.)

In an effort to improve web performance we have tried free demos of
WebDoubler from www.maxum.com which serves as a local web cache so that any
site we've been to before is served from our school LAN rather than over the
Internet (avoiding both our ISDN line and the dreaded bess.) Early tests
show impressive results. The company offers 25% discounts to educational
institutions in addition to volume discounts. We are considering purchasing
a single server license (which is all we need) for about $700, but there are
significant price cuts available if we purchase more licenses with other
schools. Anyone out there interested? Check out the web site, download the
free demo (there's almost no set-up, ) and/or email me directly if you've
    got questions or are interested.

    Thanks!
