Hello All,
A few comments from an "Old" retired Computer Lab-PE-PCP Specialist. I've
done it both ways, and let me tell you, when the students are in the lab as
a PCP period as opposed to PE, they are not very happy. Most, at least the
K-5 variety, would rather be having PE. A half hour is really not enough
time to really get something going in the computer lab, either. The other
downside to using the computer lab for PCP is that I firmly believe the
classroom teacher should be involved with their student's computer lab
experience. The classroom teacher, working with the computer lab teacher,
can create a more integrated, meaningful learning experience for the
students, then they won't just spend the time playing games, or surfing the
WEB.
I think the ideal situation would be at least an hour in the lab, with both
classroom teacher and computer lab teacher, working together to integrate
the students' computer skills with learning presently taking place in the
classroom. That's the best of both worlds, and for classroom teachers who
may still feel a bit intimidated by computers, it's a way for them to
acquire computer skills, also.
My 2 cents........For what it's worth!

Hi all. I am hoping to take one or two days and visit some schools that
might provide some inspiration for the Madrona Technology program. I'm here
trolling for contacts and invitations.
Our situation is this: We are a K - 8 schools with a computer lab as our
only technology instruction available. The lab is used in a PCP rotation (a
hold-over from the K- 5 days) for all students. The end result is that
students are dropped off at the lab for 40 minutes once and sometimes twice
a week "to do computers". After many arguments to the contrary I think that
Madrona is going to stick with the PCP/ Lab line-up for at least another
year - until we receive levy computers and start staff technology training.
Are there any schools out there that feel that they have a good thing going
with a computer lab and or a technology PCP period? I would appreciate any
contacts that are offered.
Thanks
