Mark,
I find your comments interesting because this inventory process has been
going on since last year. I find it hard to believe that you are being given
only two weeks at this time!
With the new Infotech program at Cleveland, we had originally got a
volunteer from the community to do our inventory because of the Technology
Plan that we had to submit to the district. It took him two weeks to
inventory all the rooms. We did the most important items like, serial
number, model, brand, etc. After all this work, our IS person then said that
there was more information needed for each machines.... the list was
incredibly long! Originally our IS person was suppose to do this inventory,
but since most of the leg- work had been done, that list was taken by our IS
person, added to and submitted to the district.
It has now been one year since that inventory and there has been a person to
update that information on an on-going basis. One of the things we did was
ask the teachers to help fill out the basic information on their machines
and submit it to be put into a database of some sort and then the rest was
filled in. When I was I Mercer, we did the same sort of thing so that all
this didn't overwhelm one person. Although Bob Boswell at the time kept the
data base up and kept the inventory up on his own time too! Neil Rockwell I
believe is keeping up this tradition.
So, I know it is discouraging, but it is also important to monitor the
equipment in your building. It is a way to argue for new computers from the
district too. There are always pros and cons, however the fact that the
district doesn't compensate teachers for their extra time has always eluded
me too. Teachers put in enough time and hours as it is and it is not even
the money, but just time to breath.

I just had to speak up about the latest unreasonable technology demand
on our schools. We are to take care of the inventory of all our
computers - in less than two weeks. This information is needed by
OSPI. Detailed information about every machine in the building.
Several hours work. This will not be done by the IT or IS departments.
I assume they do not have the time. Apparently schools DO have the time
AND MONEY to do this.
At my school, our U-Wired student will do this. This assumes he has
nothing better or more pressing to do. Wrong. We have a plan for
technology in our building, long and short term. When something like
this lands in our laps, it sets everything back. Our U-Wired student
will spend several hours on this. Those are several hours staff and
students will have to wait for things to be set up or problems to be
solved in their classrooms. And of course we pay him for his time. I
will supervise his work as usual, on my own time.
The assumption that this kind of task can be passed off on Seattle's
schools, that they can find a way to just kind of absorb this kind of
hit on their time and money is well, .... I'm beyond words. - Mark
