Dear Mark and others,
It is unfortunate that you had such a negative experience with your
training. We at Roosevelt tried something similar earlier this year and felt
some frustration ourselves. This led us to believe there must be a better
way.
Roberta Johnson put me in contact with Rick Henry who promptly sent me very
useful information. He provided us with a skills survey, sign-up sheets, and
overviews of the trainings. We had staff take a quick survey on their
e-mail/basic computer skills during a faculty meeting. Based on their
scores, staff members signed up for one of the following options: Basic OWA
training, Accelerated OWATraining, or indicated no need for training. We got
this information to Rick before the sessions so that he could check on the
status of accounts. I must say that the training sessions went well, even
very well. Staff members indicated that they got their questions answered.
Grouping students by experience, as in many educational settings, really
makes a difference. It also made a big difference to have a facilitator with
experience. Thanks, Rick.
We set this up mostly due to the fact that all committee meeting minutes
(and we have plenty of committees) and staff bulletins are now distributed
by e-mail. Despite the glitches in the program, it's working for us. I think
we've reached the point where anyone willing to log-on can, and will.
