Thanks for the heads-up, Neil. I just received a new HP printer and hadn't
taken it out of the box. Thanks to your e-mail, I checked the cord, and
sure enough, it is one being recalled! I appreciate the info.

An issue with Hp printers has come up and I thought I would share it with
    the listserv:

A large quantity of HP printers have been shipped with faulty power cords
that can cause shocks. You can order new cords through Hp.com. Look for the
word "Longwell" in the space between the blades on the molded plug. It also
has to be grey, not black. The following is a description of the problem:

We have recently learned that Longwell Electronics, of Brea, Calif.,
in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
(CPSC), is voluntarily recalling about 2.5 million power cord sets
sold with inkjet printers from Hewlett-Packard Company. Longwell
reports that the connector can break, exposing electrical contacts and
posing a shock hazard to consumers.
The gray, two-wire power cord sets with a LS-7C connector were sold
with the following HP printers: HP Deskjet 800 series and 900 series,
HP Photosmart 1000 series, 1100 series, 1200 series, and 1300 series
inkjet printers. The name "Longwell" is molded on the plug between the
    blades.
