    What you say all sounds logical, however life on the network for data is
    affected by several variables one of which is bandwidth but by no means the
    only thing.

    Other considerations include things like local network speeds in a building.
    The number and kind  of protocols running on that network
    The amount of actual overhead  consumming bandwidth.
    The quality of the wiring including the punchdowns
    Whether high traffic loads are segmented or given a direct path to a server
    or the internet connection
    The actual speed of the bus that the ethercard  is attached to and whether
    the card has extra buffer space.
    The bus speeds on the main board
    The speed of the processor and whether it does secondary caching
    The speed of hard drives on the servers
    The amount of memory on a server
    

    These are a few of the things that i can think of just off the top of my head that will affect performance.
