At Madison, we control all of the Windows 98 computers using a Poledit
policy based at our NT 4.0 server. When students log on at the local
computer, the server reads the policy and then locks down the local computer
appropriately (and intensively!) for that user. I also modified the local
registry on each computer so that students cannot cancel past the log-on
screen.
The only problems we had were with those pesky user profiles. User profiles
with a 2000 or NT workstation are not too tough but the Win 98 version can
be a real pain. I did not really want user profiles in the first place but
they needed to be enabled to allow use of the policy on the server. I
finally found a registry hack that will disable the propagation of profiles
between the local computer and the server.
Only one issue stands between me and having the Win 98's just the way I want
them. When a user logs on to a Win 98 computer for the first time (if
multiple users are enabled) a message pops up stating "You have not logged
on to this computer before. Would you like the computer to retain your
individual settings for use when you log on here in the future?" If anyone
knows a way to eliminate this message and set the default answer to "no" I
would be the happiest camper in the world. Right now I have a LONG way of
getting around it but it involves updating the registry on each computer
every time I want to add new users to the system. Yuckers! It works ok for
the room-accounts I have now, but will get out of hand when we move to
individual student accounts.
Wish I could offer comments for the Mac question, but we do not use any
here.

I have been interested in the recent posts regarding student accounts. We
are wrestling the same issues at AS#1. Thanks for sharing what you are
doing.
Previously we experimented with various ideas on an independent server. Now
we have a new server which we will join to seattleschools domain for the
kids so we are re-thinking the issues. (Don't have teacher stations / server
yet.)
We want individual accounts for each student and a secure place for each
individual to store data and then access from any machine on the network.
Also thinking we'll want non-CWS log-ons for staff.
Is anybody getting roaming profiles to work the way they are supposed to?
Perhaps file redirect for mydocs etc instead? How about comments regarding
the pros & cons of USER level group policy options versus COMPUTER level
group policy options? And what about those Macs?
