One big problem that we've had at my site is that when the CWS's came in
most of the teachers had the delivery team connect the printer that had fed
the classroom computers to the CWS. Then they discovered that we couldn't
share the printer to the rest of the computers (which are NOT on
SeattleSchools.org). Also, the district is trying to get us to stop
attaching a printer to a computer and sharing it.
If you use Ethernet printers or use Ethernet to Parallel converters, like
HP JetDirect boxes, then you can use the printers with regular computers or
CWS computers. I've been buying lots of the JetDirect boxes off of
e-bay. You have to be careful what Models you buy though. Some only work
with IPX. Some only work with DLC. Both of these protocols are
no-no's. The models 170 and above are good. JetDirect EX Plus work quite
well. JetDirect EX are hard to program. You have to setup a BootP Server
to program them. Yes, you do have to program into the boxes a number of
parameters including IP address, SubNet Mask, Default Gateway at the very
least and SysLog-Server, turning off IPX, DLC, and AppleTalk, so it isn't
Plug-and-Pray. And, you need a Win2K Server or WinNT Server to get more
than 10 computers connected. I don't use SeattleSchools.org so I have to
setup my own Print Server. I also use the server to deliver the Internet
Filter that I add onto Bess.
