    --- TIC-TECH message:
First of all, it is very do-able. Of the 88 school libraries that used the
Library Automation (Follet) system, 55 of them used Mac LC 475's (as your
Library did). Many of the Libraries were connected to the Internet.
Franklin, AS1 (Pinehurst), K-12 Summit, Sacajawea, and Whittier come to mind.

You need to have Ethernet up and running along with Open Transport. Open
Transport is needed if you are using DHCP. (I would suggest using manual
configuration at first to get things working). Information Services used
to have an exact procedure written out for setting up the Mac Libraries
that gives details on configuring the Mac LC 475's for Ethernet. Have you
checked with your school's IS Analyst? The LC 475's that were in the
    Library should be mostly setup.

Assuming that you did all that, the most likely cause of your problem is
Bess is not configured or that it is configured incorrectly. Or, that
leads to the exact same situation as yours...no connection and a message
about no DNS Server being available.

To configure Bess, go into the Advanced setup, checkmark to use a Proxy
Server, and enter "Bess-Proxy.ssd.k12.wa.us" with the port being "8080".
There is a lot of problems in the schools where the Internet was working
with the kids disabling Bess or typing in an alternate Proxy Server
address. Up to last year, it was possible to actually bypass Bess this
way. It no longer works in SSD. If you don't go through Bess, you don't
go anywhere and you get the exact error situation that you reported.

(Ahh...I just reread the original posting and noticed the Bess address of
"bess-proxy.seattleschools.org". I have had problems with that address and
    suggest trying "bess-proxy.ssd.k12.wa.us".)

There are a number of other problems that can also mess you up. Checkout
the Proxy Server settings and let us know if that doesn't help.
