--- TIC-TECH message:
Telneting into cks and using pine to access e-mail is about like using a
slat and piece of chalk in the classroom <grin>. We need to get people
into using better tools, like OWA. These newer, graphic user interface
applications like OWA, Eudora, Internet Explorer e-mail, Netscape e-mail,
etc are much easier to use than pine with a little learning and allow you
to do much more, like send and receive attachments.
All of the VAX e-mail accounts and cks e-mail accounts will be going away
soon. So, we all need to get transferred to new accounts which the
district is supplying. CKS may still exist, but as a "post office" where
your incoming mail is stored and your outgoing e-mail will be sent out
from. Someone has to configure the new e-mail account once, but after
that, you just point and click.
As an example, Ingraham has just come up for conversion to the new e-mail
system. So, all of the VAX e-mail users and cks users will fill out new
forms to apply for the new district accounts. Also, if anyone without a
district e-mail account wants one, they can apply now. They will then
finally get rid of that "cks.ssd.k12.wa.us" on their old e-mail address and
get "SeattleSchools.org" on their new e-mail address. A team will install
the new applications on the schools' computers and we will arrange for
training for anyone who needs it.
