    Teach the Teacher
The Teach the Teachers program will happen again this summer. It is
designed to help teachers who want to use technology. Teachers will spend
one week between July 15 and August 17 at Western Washington University
focusing on how to use technology to improve teaching and learning. If you
need more information regarding the program, contact Eric Caldwell or Les
    Foltos.

    Intel Teach to the Future
Intel Teach to the Future program Master Teacher Recruiting Information and
Participant Teacher Recruiting Information was made available to the
attendees. The deadline for applications to each program is quickly
approaching. Please contact Les Foltos or Eric Caldwell for more
    information.

    More Training for Certificated Staff/Teachers
This summer The Seattle Public Schools will again offer three c lasses to
school building staff members who have direct responsibility for the
maintenance and operations of computer hardware and networks. The classes
    are A+ (July 9-13, 2001), On-Ramp to Networking (July 26-28, 2001) and
Networking for School Administrators and Staff (July 30-August3, 2001). If
you are interested in the training, please speak with your Network Analyst
of Instructional Technology Specialist. Enrollment will be coordinated by
Information Services. To register online, go to Inside.seattleschools.org.

    CKS Dial-In Access Discontinues April 2, 2001
CKS Dial-In access will be discontinued on April 2, 2001. Telnet and POP3
or IMAP clients will still be able to access CKS mail.

    New Technology Levy Manager
John Rowlands introduced Manuel Ovena. Manny will be the new Technology
    Levy Program Manager.

    Summer Employment for Students
Mike Donlin and Charlie Walker have put together a program to get kids
summer jobs. Students should put together a cover letter and resume to hire
the kids for the summer for school district jobs. Job placements will also
be possible with the City of Seattle. Student resumes should be forwarded
to Cecelia Alvarez or Mike Donlin.

    Dell Computer
Charlie Walker introduced Susan McDaniel, new Dell Representative. Susan
will be coordinating with Charlie to improve the support program and
services offered to the Seattle School District. Susan mentioned that as
part of that plan, there will be a true escalation process for getting
replacement or compatible parts from Dell.

    Door Prizes
Door prizes were given out via a drawing by Charlie Walker.

    Apple Computer Network Assistant Presentation
Kurt Godfredsen provided a demonstration on Network Assistant.
Network Assistant is a teaching tool and computer software management tool
designed for O/S9 MAC users. Network Assistant allows for ghosting of
machines in labs, management of lab from one location, and remote
    administration.

The Network Assistant utility works on versions 8.1 to 9.0 of Operating
    System for MAC.

    Network Security ~ John Rowlands
John Rowlands provided the group with the District policy on Computer
Network Security. The District's new WAN includes special equipment and
software to protect District computers, systems, files and users. The Wan
is connected to the K20 network for Internet access.

As soon as a District facility or program is connected to the WAN, all other
Internet access devices at that site must be removed. These devices put the
District network and related equipment at an extreme risk.

Question: Is it possible for the Tech Coordinators to have access to the
    virtual private network?
Answer: John questioned why the Tech Coordinators would need the service.
VPN is being used to deliver Internet capability to schools without Internet
    connectivity.

Question: Do we have to use Bess as a filter?
Answer: The District is going to put out an RFP for a filter.

Question: How do we submit a site for review that has been blocked by Bess?
Answer: When you can't get to a site using Bess and you feel that it should
not be blocked, submit a request for review. Likewise, if you come across a
site that should be blocked, submit it for review. Whenever Bess blocks a
site it provides an opportunity to submit a change request. It usually
takes about 24 hours to get a response.

It was mentioned that www.askjeeves.com and www.searchopolis.com are great
sites to reference when searching for information on the Internet for
    children.
