Meeting Minutes
Welcome and Announcements
Neil Rockwell welcomed everyone to Mercer Middle School.
Mercer Middle School Projects
Neil and Keisha provided an update on a program at Mercer Middle School,
the
program is called Gen Y. Students learn technology in the classroom and
then mentor teachers in technology helping them to integrate technology
into
the classroom. Students learn a variety of technology, interpersonal
skills, and teaching skills with the aim of supporting teachers.
Students
and their partner teacher meet and develop a proposal that will change a
future lesson. The proposal is submitted to an online Gen www.Y
<http://www.Y> project consultant who provides expert feedback to the
student/teacher team. During their Gen www.Y <http://www.Y> class, the
student develops the project with continual feedback from both the Gen
www.Y
<http://www.Y> and partner teacher.
Generation 'www.Ys <http://www.Y's> unique approach engages students as
positive change agents at the school. Asa Mercer is the only middle
school
in the Seattle Public Schools with this program. Originally developed,
as
part of the Technology Innovation Challenge Grant in the Olympia School
District, Gen www.Y <http://www.Y> is spreading statewide, and worldwide
with students from Australia and Brazil implementing this program.
Students in the Generation www.Y <http://www.Y> program receive valuable
technology skills training in the following: Electronic Communication,
Project Development, Digital Media, Internet Research Strategies, Web
Page
Design, and Presentation Software (PowerPoint).
The teacher of the program at Mercer would like to enhance the program
by
providing the students with District email accounts.

Training
Charlie Walker announced that the training calendar for computer classes
at
Information Services is now available on the Inside.seattleschools.org
website. Training opportunities are available in Student Applications,
Financial Applications and Windows-based applications for the time
period
January 2002 through June 2002.
Windows-based classes will bear a fee of $15.00 to cover the cost of
reproducing materials distributed to class.
Why are training fees only assessed on Windows-based classes?
A nominal fee is charged for certain classes offered by Information
Services. The fees are used to cover the cost of producing and
maintaining
documentation that each attendee receives and to maintain software
licensing
on the computers in the Information Services Training Center.
Classes that cannot be found outside of the District do not carry a fee.
These include F.A.S.T., S.I.S., systems deployment classes (e.g.,
Outlook/OWA) and classes that teach District staff how to use and
maintain
their District computers and network. Software Applications training
(e.g.,
MS Office applications) is widely available outside of the District.
If you have questions about training, please call the Help Desk and
