    Seattle Public Schools
    Technology Forum
    Meeting Minutes
    1/31/02

    Announcements
Charlie Walker asked if there were any announcements. No announcements were
    made.

    Questions
Graham Hill asked if it was appropriate to auction surplus equipment that is
no longer needed and is not deployed elsewhere in the district. Charlie
Walker recommended implementation of a library check out system whereby
students could check out a PC to use at home. John Rowlands will conduct
research and update the Inside website to include information on how to
properly surplus equipment to low and reduced lunch students. It is
possible to surplus computer equipment; however, we are unable to surplus
    software due to licensing issues.

    Cooper Elementary Computer Presentation
Rob Silver gave a presentation of the computer programs at Cooper
Elementary. He gave a PowerPoint tour of the computer technology currently
in use at Cooper, as well as, how technology is being integrated into the
classroom. Rob also showed an I-Movie clip that was created using their
technology to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday and showed fourth
    grade PowerPoint presentations.

    Technology-Related Professional Development
Eric Caldwell from the Instructional Technology office provided information
about the upcoming technology-related professional development opportunities
including: the Teacher Leadership Project, Teach the Teachers, Intel Teach
to the Future, and the Teaching+Technology Coaching Initiative.

The Teacher Leadership Project includes 4.5 days of training during Summer
2002, and 3 Friday/Saturday follow-up sessions during the school years. It
includes a $9,000 allocation to purchase equipment, and a laptop computer
for each participating teacher. Successful applicants to the program are
full-time classroom teachers. Applications to the Teacher Leadership
Project are due to Jay Iman, Grants Office (AA182), by February 15, 2002, at
4:30 p.m. For more information and assistance with completing the
application process, contact Eric Caldwell at Instructional Technology.

    Tic Tech Status
The Tic Tech server is no longer available. The listserv is being hosted
through tictech.learningspace.org. If you had a tic mail account, please
complete a Seattle School District Network Account Request Form and Network
Use/Access Agreement to obtain a Seattle Schools mail account.

    Tech Levy Update
John Rowlands announced that the wiring project would be completed this
summer. By the end of the year, the classroom workstations will also be
    deployed.

    Student Computers
Manny Ovena announced that Fran Clifton from Information Services is
responsible for the deployment of student computers.

    Classroom Workstation Project
Manny Ovena provided an update on the classroom workstation project. The
computers are for teacher use while they are in a classroom. There was a
focus group in December to discuss the requirements for the classroom
computers, and a demonstration at Information Services is planned to show
the proposed classroom workstation on February 5th. The workstations will
be PCs and will have the MS Office suite loaded on them.

The project team is in the process of finalizing the specifications for the
classroom workstations and will begin the deployments at the first pilot
school, Sealth, in mid-February. Washington Middle School, Hamilton Middle
School, Gatzert Elementary and Green Lake Elementary are other pilot sites
that will be deployed in the spring.

    Sealth week of 5/25
    Washington week of 5/6
    Gatzert week of 5/13
    Green Lake week of 5/20
    Hamilton week of 6/3

    FAST B2B Upgrade
There will be an upgrade to a new version of the FAST B2B software in
mid-February. Training on the new GUI will be held at Information Services,
Ballard High School, Aki Kurose, and West Seattle High School. Please refer
school staff to this training. Training dates and site information is
available on the inside.seattleschools.org site. School users can either
register online or contact the Helpdesk at 252-0333 to register.

    Windows 2000 Migration
District computer users in administrative offices and schools will be
migrated to the SeattleSchools domain during Mid-Winter Break, February
19-22, 2002. This change will affect the way school and administrative staff
access the network. Anywhere the word Montana appears in the login process,
    substitute SeattleSchools (not case sensitive).

The conversion will also be helpful with the organization of information and
network resources, provide each site with a physical location on the
network, localize school control, and improve access to network resources
    for school staff.

Information Services staff will do everything possible to make this
transition flow smoothly. If you experience problems that are conversion
related, please contact the Helpdesk at 252-0333.

Seattle School District Computer Naming Standards
April Johnson, a representative from Network Operations, reviewed the
computer naming standards that will be implemented throughout the District.
These are not going to be implemented during mid-Winter break. The purpose
of the computer naming standards is to provide consistency in devices,
groups and username standards throughout the District's Wide Area network.
Adhering to these standards is critical to becoming part of the
    seattleschools.org domain.

A document was distributed detailing the naming standards for devices,
    groups, and usernames.

    Purchasing Computers and Software
Jerry Seaney, Dell Computer representative, gave a presentation on Dell
servers available to the District. Information on these servers will be
    available on inside.seattleschools.org.

Susan McIver, Dell representative, is presently working on updating web
information and developing model school information for elementary, middle
and high schools. This information will be posted on the web when it is
    completed.

Faculty and staff may purchase Dell PCs for personal use and take advantage
of Academic pricing. Susan McIver will provide Charlie Walker with a
special code which will allow school employees to receive an additional
    discount above the academic prices.

How can an employee purchase software?
Software Services in Bellevue and the University of Washington Bookstore
both provide discounts to School District employees with proof of employment
(school district id). This is only valid on certain software titles.

Understanding MS Recent Academic Licensing Changes
Charlie Walker reviewed the changes to software licensing. He reviewed
perpetual licensing and Software Assurance licensing programs.

Schools should purchase software upgrades under the Academic Select 5.0
agreement prior to July 31, 2002, to be eligible for Software Assurance.

All software licenses purchased after July 31, 2002, will be either a fixed
non-upgradeable perpetual license or a license with Software Assurance. The
advantage of Software Assurance is that it provides the user product updates
for up to 36 months. The disadvantage is that the license only a lease and
needs to be renewed at the end of the term.

Schools will be able to purchase a Microsoft School Agreement license for
the entire site in August. This site license will cover all machines at the
site for one year. The site license will authorize you to run any version
of the software including upgrades and downgrades for the year.

    Next Meeting Reminder
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 28, 2002, 4:00 p.m.
    until 6:00 p.m. at the A&S Auditorium, 815 4th Avenue North, Seattle.

    Adjourn
The meeting was adjourned at 6:00 p.m.

P.S. If anyone found a pair of glasses in a gray case at Cooper Elementary,
please contact Charlie Walker at 252-0303 or email
    chwalker@seattleschools.org.
