    -tictech message:

As you all know, cks accounts will be gone at the end of June. I just
tonight finished transferring several list subscriptions from my cks account
to another account. Made me kinda wistful. Made me want to thank those who
got the cks machine set up and rolling - and to those who tended it for many
    years.

I first heard about this cks thing back in 1993, I think, at an email
training meeting at Hale - conducted by Currie Morrison - who had Bob
Carlitz (founder of Kidsphere, the first of the BIG educational lists) as a
guest speaker. I'm fuzzy about the exact details, but I know cks stands for
Common Knowledge Server, and that name came from, or was affiliated with,
networks Bob developed back in the Pittsburgh area. Thanks to Currie for
being the visionary to push Seattle so long ago.

I have used my cks account nonstop since then. Despite the age of the old
box, the server managing all those cks accounts has been an incredible
truck, a real keeps a licking and keeps on ticking Timex. Kind of like
losing an old friend. Sad to see it go. Again, thanks to all who have kept
    it running.

To those who are still on cks: if you are on other lists like tictech,
please get yourself unsubscribed from those lists before June 28th. Sure,
your subscription will eventually bounce to those lists if you don't
unsubscribe, and a list manager will take your cks address off - but it will
take someone's time, and it will waste resources unnecessarily. It's kind
of like just setting the phone down and walking away instead of saying
goodbye and hanging up. When an email server of this size and history shuts
down, it has the potential to cause confusion to many. Thousands of email
transactions may fail for some time. Please do your part by properly
terminating your own account and helping others do the same.

And school webmasters: remember to delete or change those
"mailto:user@cks...." links on your school websites. Also a good idea to
pass on reminders to the many teachers who maintain classroom web pages with
    those links set up.

As I've mentioned before, many users are now receiving messages on their
seattleschools.org accounts which were actually addressed to their old cks
accounts - they are getting there thanks to a ".forward" file left on their
cks account - which automatically forwards their cks email to their new
seattleschools.org email account. As of June 28, that this will no longer
happen. Email addressed to cks accounts will just bounce - be returned to
    the sender.

If you're unsure about the status of your tictech subscription, email me.
    Thanks - Mark
