    Good news!

Most of you should find that you can simply configure Internet Explorer to
use "automatic detect settings". You shouldn't need to configure *any*
proxy settings - other than auto-detect.

We've done extensive testing with Windows NT and 2000 machines, some testing
with Windows 95 & 98, and a little testing with both Macintosh hosts and
    Netscape users.

I'd love feedback from any of you that are having difficulties with the
automatic configuration. If everyone uses it, then hopefully if we have to
make changes in the future, no one will have to reconfigure their computers.
I know - it's perhaps wishful thinking - but we'd really like to try and
    lower your workload.

    Thanks!

A lot of computers will NOT be connecting to the Internet anymore until
    you
change the configuration of the Proxy. For years, we set the Proxy to
"Bess-Proxy.ssd.k12.wa.us". For the last year or so, we also set it to
"Bess-Proxy.seattleschools.org". Up until recently, both addresses
worked. But, with the move of the Servers recently to the new facility,
the "ssd,k12.wa.us" address will no longer work. So, if a computer
    won't
connect to the Internet, check its Proxy setting.

For Internet Explorer (recent versions), go to
       Tools menu
       Internet Options
       Connections Tab
       Lan Settings button
       Use a Proxy Server...Advanced Button
http:// Blank ... make sure that it says
"Bess-Proxy.seattleschools.org" and "8080" for the port.

Do NOT have checkmarked "Use the same proxy server for all protocols".
    If
there are values in the other boxes (like ftp), then delete them.

It is also good to put in the exceptions box
    "10.*;*.seattleschools.org"

This is how I spent my last week...checking and reconfiguring 402
    computers
at Ingraham. But, I did take a shortcut, created a registry hack, and
    just
popped in a disk and fixed the proxy and fixed a couple other problems
    at
    the same time.
