Subject: Forum to feature Ken Burns
From: Michael Hutchison <mhutch@charter.net>
In perhaps the most important session held yet in the Social Studies
forum, filmmaker Ken Burns will join us for an interactive session about
the re-airing of "The Civil War" on PBS. This special session will be
held at 7:30 p.m., September 12, in TAPPED IN (http://www.tappedin.org).
The session is open to all teachers and education professionals, but
especially middle school and high school social studies teachers.
Also joining us will be representatives from PBS and WETA, which worked
with Burns's Florentine Films to create the series in 1990. The film
will be re-released with enhanced video and audio features. A companion
web site will be launched on August 29, containing resources,
information about the episodes, and lesson plans. The web site is
located at http://www.pbs.org/civilwar.
Because we are expecting a large crowd for this session, we respectfully
are requiring the following:
People are invited to ask questions of Ken about the series and his
views on the war in advance by "paging" them to Michael Hutchison in
TAPPED IN. Instructions on doing this can be found on the main TAPPED
IN page (http://www.tappedin.org). Questions will be selected and
submitted to Ken before the session so he can prepare for answers.
Questions can be submitted in TAPPED IN 24 hours a day, seven days a
week.
In addition, everyone who wishes to participate in the live session MUST
be logged in to TAPPED IN by 7:30 p.m. Eastern (4:30 p.m. Pacific) time
SHARP for a short briefing on how to post questions and maintain proper
decorum in the session. Attendance in the briefing session is required
to help assure that things go as smoothly as possible for everyone.
Once Ken's session begins, no one will be admitted without special
permission.
Persons with questions or wanting more information are invited to e-mail
Michael Hutchison offlist.
Sincerely,
Michael Hutchison
