    Joe-

We have created student accounts here at Aki, but I haven't put them into
use yet, John Ferguson (our network analyst) and myself have been working on
getting them ready, and I'm very excited for them. Last year, when I came
to Aki, we were on our own domain, and had a generic student logon. It
worked ok, but I really saw the advantages of individual accounts, and
sought for that to happen this year. Originally, I was told by our old
network analyst that there was no way to input students automatically, and
that they would all have to be entered by hand...I didn't like the sound of
that, but was will to do it. I ended up hiring someone on a personal
services contract to come in the week before school and do data entry for
me, to enter in the students (I was unable to work at the school during the
summer). It ended up that we had it all done for us by someone at the
district side (luckily I had a new lab to setup, and my hired help was able
to stay busy). Anyways.... John and I are working on policies (so we don't
need FoolProof anymore!!) and getting scripts all going. We are going later
into the year than I (and probably most teachers) had hoped, but I see the
end coming soon. Until then, I have room accounts going...... I'm looking
forward to not having to deal with disks, with saving to the Hard Drive, and
more importantly to be able to monitor what is going on with the network,
and know what student is doing it.

The things I can see being an issue are: teaching kids to ALWAYS log out,
and forgetting their password. I wanted the password to be the last 4 digits
of their ID, but we decided they will be able to choose their own. If they
forget it, I'm planning to setup a box/folder outside my door, where they
can leave their name, username, and HR teacher, and I can reset their
password for them later that day.

I'm interested in hearing what others have to say.

    Hello all,

We are considering setting up user accounts for each student here at
Madison. I can foresee some possible issues with using student accounts
(password woes, etc) and I would like any input that you have. Are any of
you at schools where individual student accounts are used? If so, how has
this worked for you? What are the issues and/or solutions you've found?

Right now we use accounts by room #. A student logs on to the account for
that room with a blank password. Teachers then set up period folders within
the home folder for that account. Students typically set up a folder for
themselves within the period folder. This has worked for us for a year now
but we've run into a couple situations where a student accidentally modified
or erased the work of another student.

    Thank you in advance!
