Joe--We at Meany have had student accounts for our students on our Mea
server for the last 2 years. Really powerful for students to move from one
classroom to another to be able to access their own folders. We established
a password protocol that looks line mea_filastname which we will change
to mny_ filastname when we move our server into the district server
(contact Matt Morton with server host questions). fi represents first 2
letters of first name and lastname is the name of the student. Each of our
seperate classes is arrainged by graduation year in files on the server. the
present 6th grade is in a folder titled 2009 . We are working with Morton
to enable our llibrary machines to have access to the student folders.
Our students seem to hold on to or remember their usernames and passwords
and teachers generally have access to both. I have put that information into
the student info on my GradePro program for each class.
We inhibit the use of the desktop; my documents; and even the a-drive to
compel the use of the student folder. This saves much of the space on the c:
for applications. It does cause a few problems withstudents not being able
to save work and losing production but this generally happens only once an
    dis an indelible lesson.
Teachers that use the server for student work can also have a teacher folder
and an INBOX where students are authorized to save their work. I have
students work on projects; save while working in their own folder; and then
save to My Inbox/Period#/Projectname folder to submit their work to me. They
like it its cool and its semi-paperless.

    Hello all,

We are considering setting up user accounts for each student here at
Madison. I can foresee some possible issues with using student accounts
(password woes, etc) and I would like any input that you have. Are any of
you at schools where individual student accounts are used? If so, how has
this worked for you? What are the issues and/or solutions you've found?

Right now we use accounts by room #. A student logs on to the account for
that room with a blank password. Teachers then set up period folders within
the home folder for that account. Students typically set up a folder for
themselves within the period folder. This has worked for us for a year now
but we've run into a couple situations where a student accidentally modified
or erased the work of another student.

    Thank you in advance!
