First, I would suggest thinking about how your Word document is formatted.
See if there are ways you could change the formatting that would better
translate into HTML. For instance, using a table to lay out a document
instead of having floating images with text wrap.
As far as software solutions, you could try using OpenOffice
(http://www.openoffice.org). This is Sun's office suite that reads and
writes Word documents. There is a Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux versions
available and it has a decent html export engine. You might also try
Microsoft Office for the Mac. There are a few cases in which I have found
the Mac version of Office to play better with non MS file formats.
