*** [[[ MOUSE CLICK DICTIONARY ]]] ***
English teachers yearn to develop a "dictionary
habit" in students, by which they reach for the
dictionary when they encounter words they don't
know. Here's a browser tool designed to do just
that, from the U.S. dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster.
Follow the link off the home page that says
"Add a Free Dictionary Button to Your Browser."
(The URL for the particular page is
http://www.m-w.com/promos/button/button.htm.)
There you find instructions for adding a
"Merriam-Webster Lookup" function to your
Netscape toolbar (Mac or Windows) or Internet
Explorer toolbar (Windows only).
I added the Merriam-Webster lookup function to
my browser a couple of months ago. Then today I
encountered the sentence "Read on for more
Schadenfreude" on Slashdot.org. To the toolbar!
I typed Schadenfreude in the search box, clicked
"D" for Dictionary, and the Merriam-Webster
Unabridged definition appeared in short order,
with pronunciation, etymology, and date of first
English usage.
I forgot that all I really had to do was highlight
the word Schadenfreude where it appeared on the
Web page, then click the "D". Re-typing of words
from the Web is not required.
Pedagogical downside: students do not learn
alphabetical order when looking up meanings online.
The Merriam-Webster toolbar button is supported
by unobtrusive advertising, and also includes a
"T" button for Thesaurus lookup. English teachers
should take a few minutes to view the site's
other classroom resources.
