INTERNET2 WILL CONNECT ALL SCHOOLS IN WASHINGTON
The University of Washington and the Washington State Department
of Information Services have announced plans to bring Internet2,
the high-speed, high-bandwidth network that currently links some
200 universities and research institutions, to all of the state's
community colleges and schools. "In the long run, what this
means for kids and teachers is that they can get early access to
new material and applications, and direct access to the next
generation of learning tools and simulations," said Ron Johnson,
vice president for computing and communications at the University
of Washington. Internet2, which operates about 1,000 times faster
than a standard connection, will let users access documents,
images, and data from institutions such as NASA and the
    Smithsonian Institution, among others.
