Greg and all,
In terms of who is responsible for placing the computers, hooking them up,
etc, I was told the building would work with IT and IS to get the job done.
We had 50 dropped off at once, which is 100 big boxes. I marked and stacked
the boxes with where they were going, according to our tech plan, and our
building custodian did most of the delivery. He certainly went above and
beyond. This took half a day, two people. Then the work of unpacking them
was left up to classroom teachers. A big, time consuming issue was dealing
with the empty boxes - all 100 of them, styrofoam blocks, and so on. It was
a big job to get all these collected, broken down (especially when everyone
didn't put their empties outside their classrooms at the same time - or even
the same day). The custodial staff was busy for several days dealing with
cleanup.
In moving the old computers, there is the recording of bar codes, item
description, etc. which needs to be done for each piece being removed. This
can be time consuming, and must be done just right, using the right forms,
requesting a pick-up ahead of time, and so on. You will certainly need a
coordinator for the effort. Parents would be a great idea - be sure and get
them involved in all phases. I hope you don't have to use your building
budget to pay for subs to finance the movement in and out of new and old
computers. That doesn't sound right to me. Good luck! - Mark

A request to schools who have already installed Levy computers. What
process/means did you use to actually place the computers in the classrooms
from the drop-off point? It is my understanding that these are delivered to
one spot, all at once, and that it is up to the building to place them where
they go.
At Hay, we will also have to move some older computers out of the way, so
this
is a lot of moving. I am thinking of a parent brigade to help, plus
sub-days
for tech commitee staff, because it sounds like a huge job. What has been
the
experience? Anything work really well? Thanks for any input.
