I started doing student accounts in 1993. If it is just and email acount I
would look for one of the newer web based programs if the district has
lifted blocking. You can put such a program on an existing server but i
would recommend that you use a stand alone since it will be easier to manage
and expand space on if needed.
However before doing any of that kind of preparation I would recommend that
you reseatch other schools who have student email and carefully chekc their
polocies. You many even find my old policies on the hale server under the
historical section...not sure if they are stull there. I will tell you this
though, my policies where much more restrjctive and consise than anything
the district ever cane up with including even what their lawyers wrote.
Your policies need to be in place before you start to distribute accounts. I
cannlt emphasize that strongly enough.

Do students need to have an Internet form to get these folders?
Can they access programs other than Internet Explorer without a logon?

Who is the building sysop who will maintain the accounts? Do you need more
than one? What will they be paid for this extra workload? What equipment
will they need? Is the sysop program compatible with an existing computer?
Who is the best person to add new accounts?
What is your policy for restricting access to an account?
What is the best way to implement this new procedure? Informing students,
teachers, & parents.
Is this system only for the computer lab or for all computers in the school?
If it is for all computers in the school, how will guests log on? Lots of
outside groups want to use the computers.
In the library will students have access to the library catalog if they
don't have a logon?
You really need to talk through all aspects of individual accounts.
